Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), one of the nation’s top technological research universities, invites nominations and applications for the position of Distinguished Professor and Founding Director of the Kummer Institute Center for Advanced and Resilient Infrastructure.

Position Description

The Founding Director of the Kummer Institute Center for Advanced and Resilient Infrastructure will have a demonstrated history of identifying and developing partnerships that translate discovery and innovation to economic impact. The founding director will develop a vision for the Center that leverages existing campus resources and faculty strengths, while identifying transformational opportunities to develop a nationally recognized center. The founding director will have demonstrated capacity to develop and inspire colleagues toward a transformational vision.

The founding director will have developed a national and international reputation for technical leadership, including a distinguished record of dissemination of knowledge, by peer-reviewed publications, citation of this published work, and translation of this work to practice via patents, demonstrations of innovation, and technology transfer. This individual will be recognized as an international thought leader in the areas encompassed by Advanced and Resilient Infrastructure, including but not limited to: smart materials and structures, asset management for construction and retrofitting of physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure including 3D printing, functional recovery characterization, multi-hazard mitigation, development and deployment of advanced infrastructure materials, design, inspection, structural health monitoring, maintenance, or related areas.

The founding director will have demonstrated a record of broader impact on both peer groups and society, including but not limited to, national- and international-level external awards, leadership in national societies, board membership, and/or editorship of prominent journals. The director will have demonstrated evidence of creating and enabling the next generation of scientists or engineers, including but not limited to, mentorship of individuals that have reached a high level of prominence in their chosen profession. The founding director will have internationally recognized collaborators and peers that can attest to the candidate’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, professionalism, and ethical conduct.

The center director will control an endowment to support center activities, and will hold a title commensurate with his or her qualifications. The founding director may hold an endowed chair with tenure in an appropriate academic department, or a Director-level appointment without tenure.

The founding director will join a Missouri S&T faculty that is recognized annually with prestigious national and international awards, whose research has been growing substantially over the past decade while retaining a particular dedication to the success of students. The Missouri S&T Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors of the Kummer Institute have challenged Missouri S&T to leverage the Kummer gift to grow expenditures and to develop graduate programs at a level commensurate with a Carnegie R1 University. This represents a transformational period in university history and an exciting new era of opportunity and innovation.

About the Kummer College

The Kummer College of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development is a new College for innovation-minded students. The Kummer College encompasses technology-focused graduate and undergraduate degree programs, certificates, and professional micro-credentials in areas crucial to the future of technology-driven workplaces.
